Questions for the High School students

OK, here is your opportunity to ask questions about the high school to members of the ninth grade class. Miss Marks and Mrs. Krout's Foundations class will be logging on next week to answer. Be appropriate in your questions and remember that I will be filtering them before they are published, so there will be a time lag before you see your question. Remember to add your name.

kelsey, you do not get to choose your own lunch period, it all surronds around what your classes are. There are only 2 lunches so if you and your friends are seperated it won't be by a lot.

I'm not sure if there are sewing classes available, if there is its not for 9th graders.

Anonymous said...

To the question about classes with older kids...

Yes, i had a class with every grade in it. Most of your classes will be with your grade, but when you are your electives you will be with kids of all grades.

Anonymous said...

Monica,
your academic grades in 8th grade reflect what classes you can pick in highschool...for example if you get below an 85% in reading or lang. arts for 8th grade you will not be able to take a language your freshman year...Mrs. wright will give you a list of classes and you will be able to pick which ones you like an dthey will see if they can fit you in...you still MUST take math science english and social studies...there is no way of getting out of them:(

Anonymous said...

~~~No, Classes are not very long. They are only an hour and a half, and some of the classes are really fun so they don't seem to last very long:P And well...for base, there isn't one. If you want to do your homework before you go home there is always block 5. That is only 30 minutes longer and you can take the late bus._I hope that this helped!!!!
In reply to Megan B's question there is a possibility that you may have classes with older students. It depends upon what classes. Your English classes will consist of all freshman, buyt other than that there is a likely chance that kids from other grades will be in your other classes. Thanks for the wonderful question.
Have a great rest of the year
Megan, in high school your classes will usually have people from other grades, but not all the time. It all depends on which classes you choose and what classes the other people in high school choose.
Most of your classes will be with your classmates, unless there are students that didn't pass or take the class the year before. If you are going to take an advanced class like algebra II, you will most likely be with upper classmen.
the classes are long! they are block classes meaning two 45 minute classes combined so you will have about 95 minutes of each subject excluding gym and foundations for success
Where will we be before school in the high school?
Hi. Before school in the high school, you are allowed to be almost anywhere. Some people like to hang out in the hallways while others prefer to wait in their first block class. It all just depends on preference.
Beth Braunegg
Anonymous said...
most of you seem concerned about block scheduling. i personally like having block classes. they make it easier to concentrate on the classes you are currently taking because there are less of them. they are also god because it allows you to do longer or more in depth things in class without having to worry about worrying about forgetting what you learned the day before. an hour and a half may seem like a long time to sit for a class, but after awhile you get used to it. the homework load is a little smaller and you don't have an insane amount of books to carry around.
Anonymous said...
Will we share classes with older kids? Or just stick with the us?
Megan Bloom
To answer your question, it can depend on the class. In my Algebra II class, there were only three freshman in my class, but there was two other Algebra II classes that were only freshmen. In most of your classes there will only be freshmen, but if you do take an higher level class, like Algebra II, then you will most likely have upper classmen in your class.
Anonymous said...
will i be able to take a digital photography class? will i get out of school earlier than 2:55?
Graham,
Photography is hard to get in. If you want to take it, you will probobly have to ask in enough advance to see if it is available. We do get out earlier then 2:55, you are allowed to leave at 2:45 unless you have block 5 with a different teacher. Block 5 goes to 3:15 The only way you will have block 5 is if you have to make something up or if you need to do extra work. If you don't you are excuse at 2:45.
Do I get to pick my own classes?
Is block scheduleing good or bad? Is there a lot of homework? Tyler Bogaczyk
1:25 PM
Hey Tyler,
You do get to pick most of your own classes, which is a great thing about high school. =]
Block Scheduling is my #1 prefernce. Although the classes are longer, and its easier to manage only 4 or 5 classes.
Depending on what classes that you have, homework is always a factor of school. =( . But
most of my classes have homework that is VERY manageable, and I think the homework issued is actually less than in middle school.
in response to Quamae McGee question block scheduling isnt that bad.. Like at the beginning of the year it goes slow but once you get used to it.. time will go fast!
Amanda
Anonymous said...
How are the classes set up? Also what classes to you think are the best, and why?
Block format which means 90 min. classes and take Mr. Matters Classes at all costs.
Is gym as fun as it is in the middle school?
no, you ride these stupids bikes and take these stupid tests and some teachers who will remain nameless are not so good.
Anonymous said...
In response to Mackenize Yaw's question....You don't really have to wait anywhere, you can go to your locker and get your books then go to your class or wait outside if the teacher isn't there yet. You can come as early as 7:25 and be able to roam the halls, but make sure your in your class before 8.
Anonymous said...
Jamie, the classes are longer than in middle school but really they're not as bad as they sound. The classes fly by so fast and usually you dont have to work for the whole time [depends on the teacher]. The good thing that also comes out of the longer classes is that you dont have to take a class like math or science for the whole year. Once you take something for 90 mins each day for a semester you wont have to do it for the next.
Cody,
There are a lot of classes. It will really depend on what job you want after you graduate that decides on what classes you take. If you wanted a job in music, the arts, of as a translator, there are a lot of options. Since I don't really know what career/ job you want after school, I can't answer that question specifically. Hope this helps you though!!
In high school, can you pick some of your classes and
Yea, you get to pick all of your classes unless they are full and so they might pick one for you but they will ask you which class that's available you would like to be in.
Anonymous said...
in response to Lizzie's question...
you must take several core classes: they are American Democratic Foundations (social studies), Earth and Environment(science), an English, Foundations for Success(a class that goes over study tips and other habits that will help you out), and a math.
Classes you can choose: a language, Creative Writing, chorus, band, foods and lots others.
Spanish is optional (it's an elective) so you don't have to, but i'd reccomend taking it.
Anonymous said...
Will we share classes with older kids? Or just stick with the us?
Megan Bloom
It depends on the classes that you take in high school. For example, I had ADF with some juiniors because they were not here for 9th grade, so they had to take it so they can graduate. Mainly, you will have classes with the kids in your class.
School gets out 2:45 and you can choose from all kinds of clubs. From sport clubs, religious clubs, to language clubs. You can also choose from a variety of classes. There are art classes, band classes, and there is a Spanish class too! Plus many others. this is just a couple:D Hope that this helped;P
Natasha
Anonymous said...
in regaurds to picking your own classes, yes you will get to pick some. there are required courses that you need to graduate like foundations for success and american democratic foundations. those classes are pretty much for freshman so you will most likely take them next year. in sophomore year you get to pick more of your classes but you have to make sure that you have the required number of credits (things you need to graduate). i like being able to pick my own classes. as freshman, you will be able to pick from a wide range of electives including art, music, gym, languages(just spanish) theatre, and cooking.
Anonymous said...
In high school, can you pick some of your classes?
~Monica Flexer
To answer your question, you get to pick only your elective courses in nineth grade. An elective course is an outside course which is taken as a "fun" course, such as a language or Drawing and Painting. As you get older, you get to choose more of what classes you want to take. Remember that you still have to take a certain number of courses though!
Anonymous said...
What are block classing like??
Quamae McGee
Hi. Block classing is basically just having a 90 minute class for half of the year rather than have a 45 minute class for the entire year. Personally, I think that this is a lot better than having 45 minute classes because in January, you will get a whole new set of classes. I think this makes the year go by a lot faster.
Nichole,
I have never got shoved in a locker, and I don't know of anyone else who has. I really don't think that is something you should worry about. you have to take the regular classes like history (American Democratic Foundations), Math, Science (Earth and Environment), Computer applications, English, Gym. Then you can pick your electives. All these classes are split into semesters. You will take half of them one semester and the other half the next semester.
do you prefer the schedule of block classes better than what schedule you had in middle school?
is homework more time consuming in highschool?
Jennie Verrastro
I think if you asked any high schooler if they perfered a blocked schedule to a normal schedule, they would say they liked the blocked schedule more. The school day goes by a whole lot faster, and you get a totally new schedule half way through the year. It may seem like you'd get more homework, but the amount of work you get is about the same.
Abbie Meckley
Anonymous said...
answering the question about a free period, in highschool, there is "Block Five" this is sort of a study hall. it goes from 2:40 to 3:15. students usually go to this block to make up quizzes and tests or get help with homework. your attendence is only required in block five if you are failing or are close to failing a class. you do not have to go, so if you are a good student, the school day ends at 2:40 for you!!
Anonymous said...
since there are so many questions, i'll answer a few in one:
sarah b.- i think the classes are relatively easy, even though they are harder than the 8th grade classes.
megan b.- you can have any class with older people; usually, you are only with people in your grade.
stephanie l.- yes, i'm afraid French will be getting a mournful good-bye.
annie- classes are about the same (you still have science, social studies, english, and gym). the homework is about the same: plenty!
Anonymous said...
What are block classing like??
Quamae McGee
Block classing is so much better than 8 periods with 45 minutes. The classes are 90 minutes long. The worst part about block classes is that if you miss a day and because you have block classes now it is like missing 2 days of classes! It is alot better than middle school...Good luck!..
Anonymous said...
How hard are the classes that you take in the high school? Which to you think is harder, classes in the high school or the ones in the 8th grade?
Overall the classes in high school are easier than the middle school classes. They are all pretty easy including Honors English. Miss Warren's ADF class is pretty challenging though, she teaches very similar to Mr. Conoway but it's not as much fun as his classes.
How hard are the classes that you take in the high school? Which to you think is harder, classes in the high school or the ones in the 8th grade?
Sarah Broshkevitch
Sarah,
The classes in the high school can be difficult at times, but I personally think they are way easier than 8th grade. The classes are much longer, but the extra time helps when you don't understand something, and need to get help. That's why I found it easier. For the second part of your question, it ultimately depends on which classes you take in the high- school. I had one class this year I struggled a lot with, but that was it. It might be different with you though beacuse you might be better at the subject than I am. Hope this helps!!
Block classes are long at times, but mainly time flies by. At first you'll think when is this class going to end? but once you get use to it, it's actually better than 45 minutes. you have more learning time, and you don't need to rush for tests .
The classes in highschool are not as hard as people would think its not like you take a huge step up unlike any other year,some classes in the highschool might be a little harder just becouse they are the next step up.
Anonymous said...
The classes are 90 and they are in blocks there is a split block where you would go to that class for 45 min but the only free time relly is lunch and if you would want to do homework you would have to take study skills.
What are block classing like??
Block classes are much longer than midlle school clases. They are an hour and a half long. If you have lunch 1 your class is split in half then you go to lunch but you go back you just get a little break but they are still long and boring but you get used to it.
If you can pick your own classes, do you prefer that over having them picked for you like in middle school.
You do get to pick some of your classes, like some of the extra ones. i much prefer being able to pick the classes becouse they are things you are interested.
do you prefer the schedule of block classes better than what schedule you had in middle school?
is homework more time consuming in highschool?
I prefer the block scheduling. It seems like the day goes much faster. For the most part the homework is not much longer than in middle school.
Are the classes really long? Do you get free time, like a base, to do your homework?
The classes are 90 minutes long, and trust me, its not as bad as it seems. i like it alot better, and most other highschoolers would agree. but you do not have any free time to do your homework like base.
In response to:
-Will French be an option next year?
-Does it make it easier having half your classes half of the year and then having the rest the other half?
CarrieBarrow
French will probably not be available next year, but don't worry: you can still take Freedom class! Woopee! [/sarcasm]
Truthfully, I don't know why they're cancelling French, but feel free to yell at somebody for it, because it's a horrible desicion! Just make sure it's the right person, like a principal or somebody, and if you say anything mean, say it in French. "Vous ne pouvez pas choisir bien et ton chemise est moche!" (You can't choose well and your shirt is ugly!) for example.
Next ?, In my opinion, having your classes halfed for the year makes it about a bajillion times easier... I think there's a really more reasonable amount of homework as a result.
And I don't take photo class, so I have no idea. Sorry.
Well, not really.
In middle school, we stand inside of the lobby at the beginning of the day until we can go to our lockers.
Where will we be before school in the high school?
In highschool you can go straight to your locker. You can also go to the cafe thing in the lobby or around the halls.
Well it really depends on what classes you are taking. Most of the required classes are with freshmen and sophomores like computer applications or earth and environment. But you can have people from all grades in your elective classes.
Dear Someone,
Next year you will be picking up the pace just a tad. Alot more homework will be assigned to you. To beable to stay on top like I do it will require giving up some things to be completely sucessful in high school. But don't worry the teachers in high school are excellent.
Anonymous said...
If you can pick your own classes, do you prefer that over having them picked for you like in middle school. you should pick your own class in middle school
You can go to your first block class
*Jamie* \../(^.^)\../
Yes the classes are longer. But this isn't a bad thing most of the time you do more than one thing. It is nice to because if you don't understand something there is 90 minutes to ask for help. There isn't a base or a study hall sorry that there isn't. But at the same time if you work hard during class there is pretty much time everyday to do your homework.
What are a lot things that we really need to be prepared?
What are some things we need to do to get good grades?
What are some classes that you have to take and some classes that you get to choose?
Are we aloud to have gum in class?
What time do 9th graders eat lunch?
What rules do we have to follow by?
*Well you should be prepared to have a big responsibilty. For example the teachers aren't going to always be on you about homework or making up a test. The thing is you want to make sure you remember to do all that stuff because it is a big part of your grade.
*To get good grades you have to make sure you are paying attention during class, participate, study for tests and quizes, and most of all make sure you do your homework!
*For 9th grade I know you will have to take ADF (social studies), math, and english. Your other classes depend on where there is room to put you in.
*The best part in high school is being allowd to chew gum! = )
*For lunch you will either be assigned 1st or 2nd lunch. 1st lunch eats around 12:00 and 2nd lunch eats at 12:45.
*In high school you basically can do what you want...I mean you have to make sure you respect teachers and students, and do all of your work. Other than that everything else is up to you.
do you prefer the schedule of block classes better than what schedule you had in middle school?
is homework more time consuming in highschool?
Jennie Verrastro
Dear Jennie,
I prefer block scheduling, you have more time learning and with the teacher.But in the beginning of the shool year it will seem like the longest class(es)ever! after awhile you will get use to it.
Some of the homework is time consuming. Science: i suggest you study everyday! if you lag behind you most likely will be lost in that class.
Thanks for your question,
Marisa Smith
*Well since we have blocked classes, they are 1 hr 45 min long. To tell you the truth that sounds super long but it actually goes by fast. And since the classes are longer you don't have as many.
*You don't really get that much free time to do your work during school inless they give you time during class, but there is this thing called Block 5 where you can stay after school untill 3:15 and do your work or get help with the teachers.
What are block classing like??
Quamae McGee
Quamae block classes are really fun because you have more time to have a full understanding of what you are learing about. The other great thing about block classes is you don't have the same classes all year long they change so you won't get bored with it. One more thing is that you might want to have time to do you homework and in most of your classes you will have extra time to work on other things. I hope that answers your question.
