The Fischbowl writes about the death of a newspaper in Denver. The ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS has ended it publication leaving a largish size city with only one newspaper. That remaining newspaper is rather shaky in its future. The comments/questions that he brings up are interesting. How do we face a future of publications? I have noted that our local paper, the SUN-GAZETTE, has been becoming thinner and thinner with fewer advertisements. I realize that I am of the old school, but I also note that during my SSR, I have several dedicated newspaper readers (thanks to the Gazette push to provide schools with free papers). These students read the papers and talk about some of the stories, ask me questions, and provide their opinions.
And how easy it is to publish to the net. I have my students creating children's books by using PowerPoint. I have asked several if they would allow me to put their books on my web site. I showed two authors their published story and noted the amazement on their faces that their work was on the net, available for any to read. Very powerful.
So Pandora, the box is opened. Despite some who feel that "Now you know" was published to scare us, the future is moving at warp speed (remember I said I was old school). Technology is available. I wonder what effect the economy will have on its growth or availability? Will we continue to be a society of the have and have nots? Will the have nots be complacent and wait quietly for their turn?
Make it a great future.

The day of the newspaper died long ago when publishers traded integrity for pay-offs. The loss of revenue by any print journal can be attributed to a lack of readership, but, that stems from a diminishing lack of credibility as more and more neophyte reporters, paid next to nothing, replace outgoing hardened veterans. The only thing that keeps our local newspaper publishing is the fact the news portion of the newspaper protects the sales and store coupons inside from the elements.
